FMP ADVERTISEMENT

Final Major Project

Why is something so bad, advertised to be so good?

Fast Food

I wonder to myself as I drink fizzy pop and eat my daily food, how harmful these things can be.

The number of overweight and obese adults has hit around 1 billion of earth's population. Being overweight or obese increases the risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, some types of cancer such as breast or colon and also could lead to strokes. It has been said that 62% of the UK's adults are overweight.

"People with higher incomes have the ability to choose the kind of foods they want. Changes in lifestyle, the increasing availability of processed foods, advertising, media influences... have all led to dietary changes." Steve Wiggins, Report Author

Depression and Addiction
Researchers have linked fast food to depression. Compared to people who eat little to no fast food, people who regularly eat fast food are 51 percent more likely to develop depression, cites a March 2012 “Public Health Nutrition” article. The more fast food you eat, the greater your risk of depression becomes, the study concluded. Additionally, some research suggests -- but has not proven -- that fast food may be addictive, according to a September 2011 article in “Current Drug Abuse Reviews.”

I read through some articles about how sugar can be an addiction and I wouldn't be surprised if we would soon to be taxed extraordinary prices for the sugar boosted snacks what are available. It is also known that sugar can be as addictive as heroin. I know that sugar is needed is a healthy diet as it gives us our energy and a treat is nice once in a while, but we can get our sugar boosts through natural occurring sugar which can be found in fructose and lactose. Is it our fault that we buy the products with temptation from advertisement and media or is it the governments fault for not banning products that are dosed with high sugar contents? In my opinion I believe both partitions are in the wrong, us being that we are the ones that purchase this deadly food and them as the worlds population is decreasing in health from obesity and having a limit on what ingredients and measurements can be used may help our healthy diets.

Maybe coca-cola is only 140 calories, but its also the chemicals what can be harmful after so much or so little. I looked up how coca-cola affects the body and what happens after so much of it. Also I came upon information that I didn't expect too see such as how this 'quality' drink can be used for a deep cleaner.
Above there is a link under resources where I looked through information about this drink.

Smoking

Everyone has heard that smoking is harmful to the body. It is one of the largest causes for death with nearly 100,000 dying from this addiction. Smoking can cause many medical problems, such as heart attacks, cancer, voice box, pancreas and many more.

Smoking advertising was banned in 2005 in Europe and health warning packaging and in April 2011 started. But why hasn't cigarettes been banned themselves? One of my main thoughts is obviously the money people will be receiving with cigarettes being a big money maker for the government.

Smoking to me is a drug, your harming your body with chemicals which kill and is addictive. Also I think smoking is another form of self-harm, whether meaningful or not. It is mind boggling how something so addictive and deadly can still be legal in any way. Some of us are worse than 'drug' addicts. We are smoking as we like the feel off it, wanting to harm our selves, 'our addicted' yet we shame on them for feeling the way we do but with a different substance. We shouldn't say yes but they tried drugs to start with, because all smokers started the same way.

Advertisement then and now:

Then-

In the past when advertisement for smoking was legal, they made all sorts of nonsense up to try to get people to buy their products. It was known as sexy for men to smoke back then as you can see in the advertisement to the left. And the others below advertise that smoking can keep a slender figure and that dentist believe smoking helps your oral health.

Also back when they advertised smoking women became 'rebellious' by smoking and it game them a sexy look. Such as Audrey Hepburn as a main icon with her and a cigarette holder,
(Helmut Newton reminds me of this advertisement).

Now:

Advertisement for now is nothing how it was in the past. It contains graphic images of diseased body parts. And suffocating children. These images are obviously shown to try to put off smoker from continuing smoking. It is really quite gruesome looking at these pictures and the images of children choking upsets all family and children lovers. It gives me a a horrible gut feeling when I see it and that's what the creators were looking for.
